Questions we get asked frequently.
let's face it, excessive body hair is rarely attractive.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is either
(a) a time-traveller from planet of the apes,
(b) a member of the David Hasselhoff fanclub, if there is such a club
(c) your mum.
Fortunately, waxing is a quick and easy way to temporarily remove unwanted hair, and as an added bonus the results will bring a smile to even the most cynical of loved ones.
Do many guys get waxed?
Male waxing is gaining in popularity as guys discover the benefits of having smooth, hair-free skin.
It's fair to say that guys of all ages and backgrounds are getting waxed every day of the week.
Personal reasons for waxing are as many and diverse as our customers, but here are a few benefits that clients have shared with us:
- Being hair-free feels cleaner and more hygienic
- Reduced body odour, particularly in summer
- Sports related benefits for swimmers, athletes, boxers, martial arts and cyclists etc
- Improved appearance and enhanced muscle definition
- Increased self-confidence
- Partners prefer the smooth look
- Waxing of intimate areas heightens sensitivity
Unlike shaving and hair removal creams, waxing removes hair by the root. This means it takes longer to grow back (we're talking 2 or 3 months before your pelt has grown back to its pre-wax state) and re-growth is noticeably softer and sparser. No itchy stubble, long lasting results and fantastically smooth skin… what's not to like?
Exactly what are all the steps involved?
These are the steps involved
- Cleanse; the area to be waxed. Make sure the skin is freshly clean, and that the hair we are about to remove is free from natural oils so the wax gets a good grip.
- Barrier; a light oil is then used to prevent the wax from sticking to your skin.
- Wax; on it goes! It is nearly always in the direction of growth. We’ll agree on the temperature of the wax on a hairless bit of you like the inside of your wrist.
- Strip; if necessary, a cloth or paper strip is firmly rubbed on.
- Remove; the wax, (strip,) and hair! Speed is our friend here - your mum was telling the truth about pulling off a plaster!
- Pressure; I will put some gentle pressure on your skin to quieten the nerves and soothe, just for a second or two.
- Oil; after wax oil is used to clean any traces of wax.
- Cleanse; last time!
- Lotion; We will apply some great lotion that keeps the skin clean and cares for you after you’ve left the room. Intimate treatments include a small sample of this that you can take away for free.
Can I get my ? waxed?
We will wax pretty much anything except your car.
In fact, the only places we won't touch are your scalp hair, beard and eyelashes. Everything else is fair game.
What does waxing involve?
The area to be treated is coated with a thin layer of warm wax, which sticks to the hair and removes it by the root when pulled off. We use a combination of soft wax (removed with paper strips) and hard wax (which sets on the skin and is then peeled off by hand) for the most effective and comfortable treatment possible.
Will it hurt?
We've heard it said that the sensation is similar to being slapped with a plastic ruler: a momentary ouch that quickly fades. If you've never been slapped with a plastic ruler, get yourself down to the stationery aisle at ASDA immediately.
It's worth remembering that we specialise in hair removal for men and as such, we know a few tricks to make sure it all goes smoothly and most clients agree that the discomfort is nowhere near as bad as they anticipated. As an added bonus, it also gets easier with every subsequent appointment.
But ‘ouch’, I’ve seen those videos on the net!
Yeah – I have too, and I have to say they represent nothing in comparison to a professional waxing service.
- They only seem to use retail products vs professional
- I’ve not seen any that use proper hygiene procedures
- There’s no pre-cleanse or pre-wax process
- The strips aren’t applied properly
- The removal of the strips is incorrect
- Critically, no pressure is applied after strip removal
- There is no aftercare lotion
- They seem to be filmed for sadistic amusement
If you broke your arm would you call a builder?
If you wanted your kitchen re-done, would you ask your Doctor to do it?
These videos do not represent the professional services that we offer!
Will it feel uncomfortable afterwards?
Some slight soreness and redness are common temporary reactions, particularly if this is your first wax. These should subside within a few hours, and many people find that regular waxing results in less irritation. It is not unusual for first time waxees to experience a few pimples on the chest and back - we recommend applying an antiseptic cream to the area for a few days after your treatment, which will help to soothe and protect the skin. We have these products available in salon.
Are there any conditions that will prevent me from getting waxed?
Contagious skin conditions will prevent us from waxing the affected area until the condition has completely cleared. Clients taking Roaccutane must wait 6 months after finishing their medication before receiving a waxing treatment. We are also unable to remove hair from skin that is sunburnt, chafed or broken, or from skin that has been treated with steroid creams, Retin-A, Differin or other retinoid acne products within the last 3 months.
We do not recommend having your first wax immediately before a special occasion or holiday, as the treated area may look and feel a little sore afterwards - better to play it safe and allow a couple of days for things to settle down before surprising your unsuspecting partner or jetting off to Benidorm.
How should I prepare for my treatment?
Please shower before your appointment and, if possible, gently exfoliate the areas you are having waxed for a few days beforehand. This helps to remove any dead skin cells and lifts the hair, enabling us to get as many of the little blighters as possible.
Do not shave or use hair removal creams (e.g. Veet) on the area for at least 3 weeks prior to your appointment, as hair needs to be a minimum of ½ cm long in order to wax successfully. If you are already getting waxed on a regular basis, you will need to leave at least 4 weeks between treatments. We will do any necessary trimming for you on the day.
We suggest wearing a clean, loose-fitting t-shirt if having your back or chest waxed, loose trousers for leg waxing, and clean cotton underwear for all Brazilian waxing. In other words, don’t turn up in your sweaty gym kit and avoid clothing that rubs excessively.
How long will the treatment take?
This depends on the area being waxed and the density of hair. Eyebrows take about 15 minutes, legs 45-60 minutes, and a chest or back wax will take 15-30 minutes depending on hair growth. A first time Brazilian takes 45-60 minutes. We allow extra time for new clients so that you don't feel rushed, but it's also worth knowing that it gets quicker and easier every time you attend.
How should I care for my skin afterwards?
You must avoid heat and friction for at least 24 hours after your appointment. This means no hot baths or showers (washing with cool or lukewarm water is fine), no sunbathing, no saunas, hot tubs or steam rooms, no exercise, and no tight clothing that might cause excessive skin rubbing. You should also avoid swimming and the use of fragranced body lotions or sprays. We recommend applying an antiseptic cream (available from your therapist) to the freshly waxed area regularly for 3 days, to soothe and protect the skin. To help prevent ingrown hairs, scrub with a loofah or exfoliating mitt 3 times a week in the bath or shower, then follow with a light slick of moisturiser.
Can I book a massage, spray tan or sunbed after my wax?
Depending on the area waxed, we generally advise first time customers to wait a day or so before having a massage. You must leave at least 24 hours before tanning, which includes fake tanning and the use of UV sunbeds. Our facials are an ideal way to relax and can be enjoyed immediately after any waxing service.
How long will the results last?
This varies from person to person. Unlike shaving or hair removal creams, waxing removes hair by the root - this avoids the discomfort of itchy stubble and your hair will grow back slower, softer and sparser. Because of the way hair grows, it may take 3 or 4 appointments spaced evenly apart to get on a growth cycle that gives best results, but stick with it and you'll soon see what all the fuss is about. To maintain your smooth appearance, we recommend waxing regularly every 4 to 5 weeks.
How much does it cost?
We operate a flexible tariff that frees you from the unfairness of a "one price fits all". Our charges are based on the amount of hair you have and how much of it you want removed, i.e. less hair = less money. If in doubt, ask!
But check our price list for the range of fee's
What does body clippering involve?
If you need a bit of a tidy but just can't bear the thought of waxing, then our clippering service may be the solution. We use professional trimmers to shorten excess body hair, resulting in a neat and natural looking finish that many people find an attractive alternative to full hair removal.
